Overview
The Specialty Function Laboratories at Children's Hospital supports several diverse disciplines. Laboratories devoted to Microbiology, Virology, Infectious Disease Serology, Humoral Immunology, Molecular Diagnostic Testing, Toxicology and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Metabolic Function and Endocrinology are all contained within the Specialty Function Laboratories. The Specialty Function Laboratories are staffed by medical technologists on a 24/7 basis for specimen receipt and processing, as well as performing a variety of tests which are considered "STAT" in nature. Below is a list of subdepartments within Special Functions:

Microbiology
The Microbiology section of the Specialty Functions Laboratory at Nationwide Children's Hospital is a full service microbiology laboratory, specializing in pediatric microbiology. The Microbiology Laboratory performs a number of tests to support the diagnosis of infectious disease using culture, direct exams and susceptibility tests. Our services include aerobic and anaerobic bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, antigen/toxin detection, and susceptibility testing.

Virology
The Viral Diagnostic Laboratory employs both new and classic methods providing comprehensive viral isolation and identification, detection of viral antigens and determination of viral antibody status from clinical samples. Some non-viral testing is also performed.

Molecular Microbiology
The Diagnostic Molecular Microbiology Laboratory has developed and clinically validated several "in-house" PCR-based microbial nucleic acid detection assays for the diagnosis of infectious diseases. We are committed to the continued review and evaluation of these and newer "in-house" as well as commercially available assays for clinical utility and potential implementation.
