Overview
The Clinical Microbiology and Immunoserology Laboratories at Nationwide Children's Hospital supports several diverse disciplines. Laboratories devoted to Microbiology, Virology, Infectious Disease Serology, Humoral Immunology, and Molecular Infectious Disease Testing are all contained within the Clinical Microbiology and Immunoserology Laboratories. The Laboratories are staffed by medical technologists on a 24/7 basis for specimen receipt and processing, as well as performing a variety of tests which are considered "STAT" in nature. Below is a list of subdepartments within the Clinical Microbiology and Immunoserology Laboratories:
Microbiology
The Microbiology section of the Clinical Microbiology and Immunoserology Laboratory at Nationwide Children's Hospital is a full service microbiology laboratory, specializing in pediatric microbiology. The Microbiology Laboratory performs a number of tests to support the diagnosis of infectious disease using culture, direct exams and susceptibility tests. Our services include aerobic and anaerobic bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, antigen/toxin detection, and susceptibility testing.
Virology
The Viral Diagnostic Laboratory employs both new and classic methods providing comprehensive viral isolation and identification, detection of viral antigens and determination of viral antibody status from clinical samples.
Molecular Microbiology
The Diagnostic Molecular Microbiology Laboratory has developed and clinically validated several "in-house" PCR-based microbial nucleic acid detection assays for the diagnosis of infectious diseases. We are committed to the continued review and evaluation of these and newer "in-house" as well as commercially available assays for clinical utility and potential implementation.
Immunoserology
The Immunoserology Laboratory provides testing for IgE-Specific Allergy. It also provides diagnostic testing for Celiac disease, Autoimmune diseases, Rheumatology and other diseases, as well as quantification of circulating antibodies and other humoral immunology testing.
