Services
The Core Laboratory provides rapid response services available 24 hours a day for routine chemistry, urine and fluid analysis, hematology, coagulation, and blood gases(Rapid Response Lab.) Most testing is completed within one hour of receipt of specimens in the Core Laboratory. The laboratory uses direct tube sampling from micro-collection blood tubes for many of its tests, minimizing the amount of blood and allowing the use of skin puncture specimens rather than venipuncture specimens.

Complex testing, including the areas of cellular immunology, special hematology, blood lead testing, sweat chloride and breath hydrogen analysis, as well as comprehensive coagulation studies are provided as routine procedures. Most complex tests are perfomed on dayshift, Monday through Friday.

Cellular Immunology
Immunophenotyping of hematopoietic cells in peripheral blood, body fluids, bone marrow and cell suspension of solid hematopoietic tissues (such as lymph nodes). Evaluation includes work up of neoplastic condition (e.g. leukemias, lymphomas) as well as other diseases (e.g. T and B immunophenotyping of lymphocytes in HIV, leukocyte adhesion molecule's deficiency, congenital immunodeficiency).

DNA ploidy analysis on fresh, frozen or paraffin embedded tissues. This is performed on all tissues of hematopoietic or non-hematopoietic origin (pediatric solid tumors.) See "Lymph Node and Bone Marrow Pathology" in Anatomic Pathology, Surgical/Electron Microscopy.

Hematology/Coagulation, Special
Bleeding tendency work up includes evaluation for von Willebrand's disease, coagulation factor deficiencies, platelet function studies and anticoagulant (inhibitors) work-up.

Inherited thrombotic tendency work up: Molecular testing (by PCR light cycles method) for factor V Leiden mutation, Factor II (G20210A) Mutation and MTHFR (C677T) mutation.

See lymph node and bone marrow pathology in Pathology, Surgical/Electron Microscopy.
